Hello, my dad had a 2011 toyota avensis with 2.0 petrol engine (3zr-fae), and the engine start to consume oil around 180k km, and at the 270k km the timing chain broke and the mechanic decides that it's not economical to repair the engine so he replaced the engine with the low milage one, do you know if this are common problems or we just didn't have luck, cuz i will like to buy rav4 with this engine, otherwise now my father but dirt cheap vw passat b7 2.0tdi with 383 000 kms, and for now its runing great, do you know if this engine have some common problems?

@tim-n47
For what engine are you asking, for Toyota or VW?

For both😂

Those Toyota engines are pretty good. If you would have changed the chain after about 150k or so km you would still be driving it. That passat though I would say is a ticking time bomb. But it all is really about how well you maintain and treat your cars. You can have almost anything last 1 million miles... but I wouldn't put my money on the volkswagen

TDI engines are turbocharged diesel engines. I prefer 1.9 TDI. If you want it to last, don't strain it over 2000 rpm while cold.

Oil consumption and leaks are not uncommon for Toyota 3ZR-FAE engines.
