Toyota Camry CV joint failing?

Topic starter

These pictures are from Toyota Camry 2001 2.2Lt engine automatic car.

I have noticed these leaks. I am not sure if this is oil or grease. Is the CV joint failing?

If yes, what can happen if it fails?

Driving wise, I hear a clicking sound sometimes.

Also, my car jerks at high speed (only above 100kmph, nothing below that speed) vigorously when I take my foot off the throttle. I am again not sure if it is related to this issue or mont.

Any suggestion?

Are there any cracks in the boot/s that you can see where grease may be coming out? Any leaks above the boot/s that may be dripping on the boot/s? Is the clicking noise on turns? If so, replace the axle shaft.

Sure looks like it. Is the clicking sound when you’re turning and accelerating from a stop?

If you don’t fix it, over time, all the grease will drop out and your joint will fail.

Watch Scotty’s video on how to fix a broken/leaking cv joint.

Is there any engine oil leaking from above the position of that boot?

Please check the first pic and 3rd pic. Noth shows the above the position of that boot. Looks like there is some spatter. I don't think it's engine oil leaking, what do you think?

Also please suggest how bad it is, do I need to fix it right now, or I can drive for 3-4 months more?

That’s why the other answer asked you to check the boots for any cracked or torn rubber. If the boot is cracked or torn, it’s surely time to change the cv joint. But odds are, since you’re hearing a clicking noise, that it’s the CV joint inside the boot, which is clicking. You’ll have to take it to an honest mechanic to check the physical condition to know if it’ll last a few months more. Since it’s a driveshaft, I recommend you get it changed, as it may potentially leave you stranded (If it is indeed the cracked boot).

Thanks for explaining.
