Dear Scotty, we are big fans! We have a 2005 Toyota Sequoia. About 6 months ago we had a whining sound upon starting that would go away after a few minutes. Then one day while driving we lost power and it would not go over 30 mph. We took it to a mechanic and he told us it was the secondary air injection reaction pump. And he changed it for around $700. However the check engine light was still on. He ran the codes and said it was an exhaust code and not anything to worry about and cleared the codes. And because the symptoms were gone and we had power again we went along our merry way. Shortly after that the check engine light came on again but because he told us that it wasn’t anything to worry about we didn’t get it taken care of right away. But now it is again making the whining sound upon startup. We took it to another mechanic and they told us that it is presenting code P2445 for the secondary air injection system! The same thing we thought our mechanic already fixed. They believe the problem is coming from inside the intake manifold and said it would cost $600 just to look inside and that to replace the SAIS would be around $3500! So…if this is the same code that it had before, how did our other mechanic fix it for under $1000? And if he didn’t really fix it how did the symptoms go away? We told him it’s still showing the same code and he is offering us a refund rather than to fix it again. Should we be worried? If it turns out we need a new SAIS what is your opinion on the bypass kit? We know the SAIS is to decrease emissions. How much more emissions would we put out if we did the bypass instead? And would there be any other negative effects of the bypass route? And what else do we need to know before proceeding? Thank you so much!!! Sincerely, Your fans John and Katey in Oregon

It is illegal to mess with emission stuff. Find a good honest mechanic for a second opinion.
