Hey Scotty!
Greetings from Dallas – I’m a big fan of the channel. I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna with 112,000 miles. The timing belt was replaced at 60,000 miles, which was about 6 ½ years ago (in March 2014). Is there a time interval after which the timing belt should be replaced, or is it just based on mileage? The owner’s manual says to replace the timing belt every 90,000 miles but it does not say anything about a time interval.
Thank you for your help!
Are you able to remove the upper cover to inspect the belt?
I may be wrong, but I thought that 5 years was a good time, preventative maintenance, to consider replacement. I've seen them go much longer as long as the belts weren't subject to contaminants.
Thanks for the advice! but I don't think that is very easy to do. Removing any section of the timing cover involves taking off many other components to get access
Most automanufacturer's say stuff like 60k miles or 5 years, but can easily do 100k miles or 10 years, like I did on my Kia. I would be safe and do it no late than every 70 80k miles or 6 7 years.
I would go by mileage.
Thank you!
I'm pretty sure there is an interval on mine that says something around the lines of 60k miles or 5years and I believe that a Toyota's would say 7 8 years or something. But the thing is the owners manuel said to change the timing belt on my 09 Kia every 60k miles, but I went 10 years and over 100k miles before I changed it. I would consider that if you are doing city miles, to change it in the next 6 to 12 months. Keep in mind the 3.3L V6 is an interference engine design.
Thanks for the advice!
Keep in mind manufacturer guidlines range from every 60k miles (5 years) to 96k miles (8 years), but can generally last up to 100 110k miles. I would be safe though and not wait for more than 6 7 years.
