Looks like that model year, first of a new Corolla generation, had some teething problems.

(I didn't realize anyone was still selling cars with 4-speed automatic transmissions that late, those were common 1980s-1990s.)

4 speed TC autos are still being sold, outside of North America.. The ones I have come across are mainly Jatcos.

What’s a good car?

As far as durability, reliability, ease of maintenance it’s just great - much better than later CVT Corollas.

But a tiny bit worse than the previous generation. (But it’s a different exterior, interior so it might be worth the trade off)

As far as other metrics? it’s a Corolla.

I didn't think jatco was used in toyota corolla {black}:nonoise:

What? Jatco was NOT used in Corollas.
Toyota CVTs are made by Aisin, the same company that makes their conventional automatics (although Aisin is one of the smaller companies in the Toyota Group, it’s still a Fortune500 company, and a larger one than major car companies - so it’s not a no name transmission) with exceptions, they’re good transmissions - and yet overall they’re weaker than what the conventional automatics are.

Jatcos aren’t used in Corollas. They’re used in some cheap Toyotas which are rebadged Suzukis, where the original Suzuki product used Jatco transmissions.
