What does fridged temperatures do to a transmission? I have a 2006 dodge R/T. Heard a hard grinding sound during startup. 9 degrees outside.

slows it down
Maybe I'll check the transmission fluid level

Really cold temperatures make the fluid thicker just like how your oil will thicken up in cold temps. With that being said be easy on your vehicle the first mile or so. It will give the fluid a chance to warm up and lubricate properly. Even in cold temps like that you should not have any grinding or slipping. I’ve driven vehicles in -65F and I’ve never had an issue like what you’re describing.
Do you believe in just low on fluid?
@Elmotivo there is a chance fluid level could be low yes.
