I am looking for a reliable used car for my college student. Something that will last him at least 3-4 years. I was considering a Volvo S60 with around 90k miles. However, I heard that back in 2012 years they were notorious for oil consumption issues. Do we know what years they resolved those issues?
I would look for something else. Those cars are very expensive to repair at around 100k miles. For your purpose, look for a Toyota or Honda.
How are Subaru's after 2013 gasket issues?
The weakest part of late-model Subarus is the transmission (CVT). They have been improved over time so newer models are better, however since most will not have the benefit of regular fluid changes a used Subaru with a CVT can be a real gamble. The factory pushes the bogus "lifetime fluid" nonsense and for the most part Subaru dealers will not change the fluid before about 100,000 miles and by that time the damage is done.
Best bet for a used Subaru would be one with the newer-design engine (timing chains instead of belts and no head gasket issue) and a manual transmission.
I didn't know they were that expensive to maintain. I own a Toyota and know how reliable they are, I was just looking for something with AWD. How are Subaru's after 2013 gasket issues?

This car had 12 different engine options - a lot of them burned oil
The best engine on that model was the T5, they're reliable and were paired with reasonably good transmissions.

Depends on what car you're talking about.
Subaru has never really made a great engine, but recent 1.6L engines are decent.
I own a Toyota and know how reliable they are,
Why not just get another Toyota, (with some exceptions) they're still the best.
