I am looking at a 2022 Corolla SE with a manual transmission. Dealer said it was ordered with the wrong transmission. MSRP is $23,325 and the invoice is $21,880. I will most likely lease but still want the best deal possible. My credit score is 750+ and will probably put $500 down. What should I negotiate down to?
I think you’ll definitely get a consensus here that a Corolla with a stick shift is the holy grail of reliability, but unless there is someone here with dealer connections, the level of granularity you’re asking for might be easier to get elsewhere.
My opinion is that MSRP is about the best you are likely to get on a Toyota (or most anything else) right now, and anything less is gravy. For more detail you might look at either car negotiations forums (like “your auto advocate “) or check out Corolla owners sites to ask what prices people have gotten recently.
Good luck!
Thanks for the input!
I do agree that manual cars are harder to sell in the U.S. market so this can give you a bit of power for negotiating. But then remember we are in very weird times as far as car prices so you can't expect too much negotiation. I would say msrp would be great or maybe $500 ish under msrp, but definitely invoice or anything close to invoice is near impossible these days.
Let us know how the negotiation goes!
By all means take advantage of their mistake. Try to capitalize on it. Let them know that you are aware they are harder to sell, etc.
The dealership will want you to focus on the monthly payment, I would not do that.
Try to focus on the price of the car itself, that way you can see what you are actually paying for.
Try not to pay any dealer add on fees, and watch out for the finance manager (or as I like to call them the number 1 dealership crook)
Unfortunately though, in this market you are negotiating from a weak position.
