Me and my mom went out to buy my first car last year. And we just had to buy another card this year. We've been screwed over by the dealership twice.
The first car was leaking really bad could never figure out why and was too expensive on insurance. Now when we got this different car that was a year older than the last one, the dealership talked my mom into buying some type of warranty that made the payment even more expensive than the last one.
So now it's up to me in my own money to find a car that I can afford. My spending limit is 2 - 4 grand. I'm going to work through the holiday season and save up to buy the car.
You sure got screwed over the first 2 times.
This time, no matter which car you buy, get inspected by an honest mechanic before you buy it.
Start looking at used Corollas & Civics with your budget. The more you can save, the newer the model.
Stick to both those cars as they will cost you the least in maintenance while still lasting you a long time.
Good luck mate!
Mercury Grand Marquis, lots available, 2 grand and up, stay away from dealers, buy from private party but get a HONEST mechanic to check it out. Look for mileage in the 30-70k range. Similar cars: Crown Vic, Town Car. Stay away from ex law enforcement cars or taxi's. Last forever, easy maintenance, comfort, 22mpg on V8 4-speed auto. With good driving record, insurance in the $250.00/year range.

Ditto stay away from dealers... if possible.
With a used car condition is at least as important as make and model, though you want to avoid cars that are complete junk. (Cue Scotty's pic of a GM dealer.) A well-cared-for Ford would be a better choice than a beaten, clapped-out Toyota that has not been maintained. As Scotty and everyone else here will tell you, have a good mechanic check any car you're considering before buying!
The car brands you should buy are honda and always get it checked up a honest mechanic
Get it private party like craigslist first of all. Toyota's Honda's are good. I would consider a Corolla those are great car's if you can find a camry those are also good but look for 2006 or before on the camry.
