What is the actual mileage for oil changing?

Hi Scotty, big fan

In my country, dealers recommend to do a periodic maintenance every 5000 km (3000 miles) or every 6 months, whichever occurs first. Service station do the oil changing during the PM.

My question is, can I skip the every 6 month part and do the service at only 5000 km? Because usually it takes me 8 months to complete 5000 km. Does engine oil go bad even it stays idle for 6 months? I'm sceptical if this is a myth created by industry.

For synthetic oil, you can easily go 12 months/8000km.

So, going 8 months/5km should not cause any problem.

Oil changes are cheap enough every 3-6 months just do it to avoid the risk

I change mine every 6 months regardless of the mileague. That's like 10 bucks a month added to your car payment. No big deal but your car will last. You eat out at McDonald and it's 10 bucks a meal.

It depends - if your car is reasonably new (and on it’s quality), on if you live in a dry area, and if you use full synthetic…

maybe it’s related to the risk of water ingest, but I guess it’s good to be on the safe side and do it more frequently.

Just as a side note: where I live I see manufacturers recommending RIDICULOUS 12.5k-18.75k (especially Renualt-Nissan) mile intervals but most manuals recommended 12 months or 9,500 miles (as in the case of my Focus).
