| If it’s indeed both front wheel bearings, sure, replace them both. A quick way to check for a bad wheel bearing is to jack up the tyre & check for play at both the 12 & 6 o’clock positions, as well as 9 & 3 o’clock positions. If you feel play or hear a clunking noise, it’s the wheel bearing. Also you can try spinning the tyre by hand while holding the strut, and if the strut vibrates, it’s also a sign of a bad wheel bearing. However, if you’re not sure of the source of the sound, here’s 1 technique - | |||||

| To check wheel bearing jack up the car and throw on the E-brake and put the car in neutral. Then spin the wheel and see if you hear anything, if hearing any sort of grind, then yes bearing bad. If nothing then go grab the wheel from the top and bottom and try to shimmy it from top and bottom like pulling from the top and then pulling from the bottom of the wheel, if there is play(very noticeable) bearing bad. | |||||

| Hey Scotty, just recently got into automotive and found you on YouTube and love your videos.’learned a lot. I’m needing to replace my bearings on my 2002 Subaru wrx Impreza , and you have two videos on wheel bearings one you replace what looks like the whole wheel bearing and didn’t need the press. the other video was for a front wheel drive wheel bearing and you had to use the press tool... is there a reason you did not just replace the whole thing like you do in one video? can you do the approach of replacing the whole wheel bearing housing instead of just the bearing? Thanks | |||||

| Hey Scotty. '08 Toyota Highlander Sport AWD (Non Hybrid) i replaced the front right wheel bearing this weekend as it was loose. Unfortunately this is a pressed in bearing which was a big job. I put everything back together and used a new Timkin bearing not a cheap Chinese one. Torqued the axle nut and took it for a drive, now its howling. Is it possible i over torqued the axle nut? the info i had said 217 ft/lbs which seems high. can you verify that is the correct number? ALso i hammered the bearing and hub back in place but didnt use excessive force. I'm hoping the new bearing isn't damaged. Everything went together fine so i'm surpised its making noise. The wheel is now tight with Zero play. Thanks for any help you can provide.. | |||||

| 2013 Scion FR-S Steering Wheel Wandering ( Information Dense) | 40Relevance | 3 years ago | jrr33468_LuvUScotty | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| (1) Car Information: -Year/Trim: Scion FRS 2013 10 Series -Millage: 110,000 -Trans: Manual -Location- Lower United Sates ( never in the north) (2) Problem: My steering wheel does not always point straight when driving straight. Straight position wanders with steering wheel 10 degrees clockwise after left hand turn and/or intense bump and/or elevation change in road. Creates hazard. I pucker the poop shoot every time turning left at speed. I describe the issue as feels like the car is tripping over itself. What is going on Scotty!!?!?!?!? (3) Problem Origination: Ran over rubber wheel choc with front RH/Passenger side wheel. Swerved left , hit it, then ran off road. Insurance covered initial body work in late 2021 into 2022. ( New bumper, side rail bondo) (4) Symptoms (since wreck, some days are worse, some days very minor): -Increased bump steer - Floaty suspension - When steering wheel angle locks clockwise, small to large jerk back to center as steering wheel returns to 0 degrees. This typically causes ABS to turn on. I reduce speed. -when steering wheel angle locks clockwise, I can jerk steering wheel to return to center, hit bump to return to center, or wait to be jerked back. If road is even, I can drive over a mile with steering wheel positioned/locked 10 degrees clockwise. (At times when jerking steering wheel back to center ABS engages. At times I feel like I can hear a small grinding sound as I jerk the wheel, which may still be ABS but no ABS light.) -Pinball effect, when issue happens at speed (typically on uneven and/or change in elevation chicanes on freeway) , jerk back to center starts left to right death wobble. Feels like controlling a floating bull as the gauge cluster lights up like a Christmas tree. -Long left hand freeway ramps if taken at speed starts ABS on left hand wheel. NO ISSUE when turning right at speed. -When ABS engages. Light does not always go off unless intense ABS. When car is put in Trac Off, ABS still engages with Issue. No change in symptoms. -Problem intensifies over uneven roads or large change in elevation -Increased speed on even roads with less than ~10 degree steering wheel angle variation left or right , NO ISSUE -Increased inside tire wear. Bald tires wander worse then full tread tires. -(other)I know I probably need new bushings, front suspension sounds like bag of rocks when going over minor rough terrain at parking lot speeds. (5) Work that has been done over 1 year period to try and fix: ( At first Service would not believe me and shrugged me off) -Multiple Alignments by Dealer -ABS Diagnostic by Dealer -New steering rack assembly including inner an outer tie rods by Dealer (This hardened the steering and helped stop the pinball effect) -Steering angle recall by Dealer -Computer codes reset by dealer -New Brakes by me (Helped reduce ABS intervention at lower speeds) -New rotors by me -Added Brake Fluid -New Tires (Current tires Micheline AS4, Previous Micheline AS3/+, will need 2 new tires soon from front end issue chewing them up) -Reducing/increase tire pressure (6) Documentation I am at a loss here. I love my car. I have no clue what is happening. When I even attempt spirited driving, its not possible unless I speed through the ABS warning and loose half my steering ability. With the bump steer back to neutral wheel, I've almost had various new wrecks solo and with other cars. I have written this long format in the hopes all this information will lead to a solution. I also know dealership service is not the brightest, had 4 visits for the same cam plate oil leak when the car was under 30,000k miles and still under bumper to bumper. | |||||

| Easiest solution!!: Remove your steering knuckle, with the old hub and bearing still in tact. Take your new hub, bearing and knuckle to a machine shop and have them press out old hub and bearing then have them press on the new hub and bearing. Then take your knuckle with new hub and bearing and re install on your car 😀 😀. That will save you 4 hours of you trying to fight pressing out and in new bearings. | |||||
| VW 2005 3.6 Touareg Wheel Bearing Noise | 33Relevance | 5 years ago | Allen_Huang_1987 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello Scotty, My 2005 Touareg has humming noise, I guess it's from the wheel bearing (front wheel passenger side). I have been following your videos for quite a while, and I know you don't like vw. I know you have video's for wheel bearing change, and also methods to diagnose. I bought the car like 6 yrs ago when it was 74k miles, now it's more than 140k, so I am not surprised something may start to breakdown. My question is can I change the bearing by myself, dose vw require any special tool to do that? Don't want to spend too much on it, or should I just live with it. Thank you. Surprised this boy still runs fine though 😆 | |||||

| Merry Christmas, I have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline and the left rear bearing has gone out, I have found out that this year Ridgeline doesn't have a bearing hub assembly which includes the bearing and lug nuts. I have to remove the shaft and replace the bearing. Is there a tool that I can purchase to remove and replace the bearing or do I have to take it to a shop that works with bearing. Any other help would be appreciated. Thank you and Merry Christmas.....Pastor Kurt Enter Scotty Kilmer | |||||

| Answer to: Wheel Bearing Adjustment/ Need New Bearing Already? | 31Relevance | 4 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Did you replace the bearing races inside the hub as well as the bearings themselves? Thoroughly grease the bearings with a good high-temperature wheel bearing grease? Timken or SKF bearings are usually best if available. Taiwanese parts are generally better than those made in mainland China but they can be sketchy as well. Finding good quality replacement parts can be a real challenge these days. As you found out with your master cylinder even the "OEM" stuff is not what it used to be. | |||||
| I can't find a replacement wheel bearing | 38Relevance | 4 years ago | Mr.E | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey guys im racking my brain on this one, so i had a valve stem changed on one of my tires for my 2001 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 and during the tire removal they saw there was a lot of play on the tire pratically from all angles and was told my wheel bearing needs to be replaced. They asked if i have heard any growling noises or anything substantially different when driving and told them no that the only thing i notice is when im braking the steering wheel jitters left and right but not to where im pulling to the side or anything, its rather fine. So im looking online for the rear side wheel bearing but i cannot find any for the life of me! I only see wheel bearings for the front side of the vehicle none for the rear...am i missing something or is it just hard to find that specific part? I'm aware it comes as an assembly but do i need the whole piece or only the wheel bearing itself? The mechanics quoted me 500 with parts and labor for both rear sides so if i wanted to only do the worn out one itd be about half the price give or take. Id love to hear what you guys think on the matter. I do drive 60 miles to and from work everyday hitting 45 from my small town to dallas for work | |||||

| Hello, I have made a post on my noise issue earlier with a possible bad wheel bearing ( To sum it up, I get sporadic squeals when in motion. I originally thought this was the wheel bearing going out but after getting that replaced, there is still noise. i looked under the car (2010 RDX w/194xxxkm) and have found a greasy/leaking inner cv boot on the passenger side, the side where the noise came from and where I also replaced the bearing. The outer boot is dry. Could this possibly be the source of noise? No traditional clicking or major vibrations though. After some Reading, another possible symptom is the clunk when going into reverse or drive, which I occasionally experience. could I get an opinion on the possibility of the inner cv joint going/being bad? | |||||
