[Solved] 1998 Avalon Limited Fwd = $1,200 with some rust

Replacing our 98 Camry frame rusted out and Mr Mountain Man Joe advised to get rid of it.   Looking to be as money efficient as possible.  This Avalon stands out for low price and seems solid with only $170,000 miles but has some rust and needs rear brakes.  Assuming this checks out mechanically would you advise going with this or spending another $2,000-$3,000 for anAvalon a little newer and no rust? Link to the cargurus ad for this below;

thanks in advance for your expert insight and advice!

I would go newer and no rust. Rust only gets worse and the amount of work it takes to get rid of it requires a lot of time and money.

For the price difference you can find a better car. 🙂

K thanks I was afraid you would say that and totally makes sense to me. Thank you for talking me off the cliff.

You're welcome. I just hate to see someone throw good money after bad. Be patient and I guarantee you will be MUCH happier in the end. Waiting isn't fun, I know.

Appreciate that objective looking out definitely cant afford to waste money for sure!

Trust me, I fully understand. 🙂

besides what is visible in the photos what else could be wrong with it as its a "cheap" car. i would not bother with it if it has rust that you can see, there will be more you cant see.

Makes sense. Thank you.

I would look for a good private part deal on one often you can find one in good shape (grandpa driven) for a low price be patient and like the others said above, you won't regret it!

Spend a bit more. You won't regret it.

Just buy the Avalon from 05-08. They are way more safe, reliable, fuel efficient, powerful, yet not that much more- you can get a good used one for $5000.

I've always found Avalon's to be really boring... What about a solara?or do you need a sedan?

Appreciate you expanding the ideas with your input and its a great idea. I took a quick look its two door I think. In this case thinking ahead to starting a family and this would be for me mostly as well as a backup to my wifes new used Highlander if needed. definitely appreciate you chiming in and supporting though!

Youre welcome.. how about a honda fit

Cargurus says its sold already and the listing is gone, continue looking! I'd look newer.

that's because someone dug up an old post. Check the date.

Oh its been a month. I guess its old, but I see cars on Cargurus not selling for 300 400 days I guess someone else jumped on the deal.
