Oil on store shelf claims to last 20,000 miles

Hey Scotty, I was at the store and noticed a premium synthetic oil that promises it will last 20,000 miles.  What's up with this?  I am sure its some do gooder environmentalist's utopian idea, but what did they add to the oil to rate it for so many miles?

It's marketing nonsense. No engine oil will last anywhere near that long under normal driving conditions.

It's a nonsense just like the lifetime transmission fluid nonsense. Always just buy the right oil and a reputable brand and don't pay even a penny for these marketing nonsenses out there.

More marketing nonsense and probably a collaboration in planned obsolescence between the motor oil company and some car manufacturer.

Even if engine oil itself could go that long without changing (it slowly breaks down after repeated pressure and temperature swings, not including tiny particulates that build up), the filter will have long lost its efficiency by then. 10,000-12,000 miles is the longest I've ever seen filters being advertised as good for. Don't test the lifespan of the oil or filter, oil is the lifeblood of your engine. Change your oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Oil isn't expensive, nor are filters.

I do not plan to use the 20,000 mile oil, cause I'm waiting for someone to come up with a 40.000 mile lubricant. {pear}:nerd:

@avalon04 - You probably won't have to wait very long.

just shove twenty dollar bills down the crankcase every day. 😆

Yeah, they should put a picture of someone doing that on the front of their 20k mile oil container.😁
