2002 Nissan Maxima P0300/306 Misfire - 314,000 Miles

Driving home one night and the check engine light (CEL) popped on and the engine began to run extremely rough. Checked the code and P0306 popped up. Replaced #6's Coil on Plug (CoP) with #2's. Ran for a bit and then the code changed to P0300. Replaced #2's coil and installed new CoP on cylinder #6. Drove it very slow home and pulled it up on the ramps. No spark on #2 nor #6. Spark on #4. Replaced coils and plugs. No change. Replaced cam and crank sensor. No change. Whoever designed an intake plenum to cover the spark plugs for cylinders #1 and #3 should be shot. Popped the coil and spark for cylinder #6 and didn't notice an idle change. Fuel sprays on #6.

So in the video you say that spark on #4 is also unreliable.

You essentially have one cylinder bank with NO SPARK.

Your 2002 Maxima has 3 wire COP coils.

On each coil connector, one wire is battery voltage (Power), one wire is Ground, and the third wire is the triggering signal from the computer to "fire" the coil.

You can test the Power and Ground terminals of those 3 wire ignition coil connector terminals (KEY ON) with a test light.

And that may be the problem. Maybe there's an issue in the power or the ground wiring to that cylinder bank. From your video, it looks like Nissan used a splice on those wires instead of a connector. 

So start with Power and Ground. See what you find out.

Here's a 2002 3.5L Nissan ignition circuit with the coil pinouts. It's for a 3.5L Pathfinder but it's likely that your 3.5L Maxima is wired the same way.

In the diagram Black is Ground, Red is Power, and the different wiring colors to each coil are the triggering signals.

So use a test light and test for Power and Ground (Key ON) on those ignition coil connector terminals.

It's likely, since this issue affects only the #2 cylinder bank, that it's a Power or Ground wiring issue in the harness.

This is really me (Chenago), but I couldn't log back into the website with my original ID and the site wouldn't send a password reset to my eMail address...so now I'm Chenago2.  Joy.  🙂

Tested voltage on 2, 4 and 6.  They are getting power.  Need a way to see if the trigger voltage is being sent?
