Do I have to do everything in the maintenance manual?

Hello,

I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma w/ Reg Cab, 2.7L I4, 51k Miles, Manual. I recently got my license and my dad is giving me his Tacoma that he garage kept and babied since new. I have some questions about the maintenance of the Truck according to the maintenance guide. I want to know how important it is to check and inspect all of the items listed within. I want to do the maintenance by myself and I understand the importance of changing oil and the filter at given intervals but I don’t have a clue on how to inspect the steering linkage and boots. I want to take this truck as far as it can go into the future but I’m worried I can’t do the maintenance that it needs to go 300k or beyond. Besides oil it hasn’t had any fluids changed so I changed the coolant, the transmission fluid, transfer case fluid and the rear diff fluid (I couldn’t do front diff because I couldn’t find the fill bolt). I also plan to undercoat it. For the other maintenance items should I just take it to a trusted mechanic to inspect the entire list instead? Also, I have experience in dirt bike and motorcycle maintenance and repairs but cars seem very very daunting. Thanks in advance!

I don't know what a "TLDR" is - a part specific to the Tacoma?

The maintenance guide is the minimum that should be done. In at least some cases it is recommended to cut the factory service intervals in half - typically using what the manual would call "severe service" maintenance intervals. (For example if the manual says oil and filter changed at 10,000 miles you'd do it every 5,000.) You may want to pick up a shop manual if you'll be working on the truck yourself:

The fill plug for the front differential may be in the differential housing instead of the cover. This video shows changing the front diff lube but I'm not sure if your year Tacoma will be the same:

Thanks! I’ll look into getting a service manual and I’ll do all the maintenance myself. Also, TLDR means “Too Long, Didn’t Read”.

OK, sounds good. (I'm not really up with the lingo used by today's young hep cats.)

Oh, and always make sure you can get the fill plug out before you take out the drain plug!

😆 hah
TLDR = "here's the short version:"

I don’t have a clue on how to inspect the steering linkage and boots

Just grab the steering linkage with your hands, jostle it, and make sure there isn't a lot of play in it. Jack up the front wheels by the control arms to load the suspension (be careful. use additional support because it can shift) and the grab the wheels at 9 and 3 and rock them side to side.

Put grease in the fittings if there are any. Make sure the boots are intact. That's about it.

I’m worried I can’t do the maintenance that it needs to go 300k or beyond

Pick up a repair manual.

I also plan to undercoat it

Use the wax/oil style coatings ( Crown, Fluid Film, etc.). NOT rubber.

Eventually you'll need a professional mechanic you can trust anyway. So ask around.

But even a backyard mechanic can learn to perform all the inspections himself.

but cars seem very very daunting.

same principles as your bikes. Just bigger and more parts.

TLDR: Do I have to do everything the maintenue guide states for a 2002 Toyota Tacoma?

I don't see why you wouldn't.

Don't forget to lube the driveshaft. Many owners ignore this and end up with VERY expensive problems down the road.
