Scotty,
Looking at getting a fun weekend camping vehicle. I found an 02 Toyota Land cruiser for about $6k that appears to be in pretty good shape, but it has 350k miles on it! If all the regular maintenance has been done how much longer can this thing go? Thanks!
I know they are durable vehicles, however with that kind of mileage I think it's nearing the end of the road for a number of what are probably all original components.
My first thought was the owner is trying to take advantage of the sky high used car prices and knows the vehicle is close to having some major repairs required.
Yep. They were definitely leaning on the land cruiser name to try and sell it without listing the exact mileage initially.
you can't be serious. 6 grand with 350000 miles?
good luck with that
Basically what I told him. He told me it was higher mileage but 350k was waaay more than what I was expecting for 6k.
I would offer 5K if you really want it, and these things are done.
1. timing belt fairly recent, or that is going to cost you the better part of a grand
2. As @mountainmanjoe said, get a really good inspection. Also, as @autoDIY said, a lot of parts could be nearing the end of their life, if you have to start replacing all kind of stuff, Tie rods, ball joint, cv's, suspension, etc, that kind of stuff adds up quick.
3. if it is in good shape, and the previous owner has done a lot, and has some really good maintenance records, and you are willing to do some yourself. Tires in very good condition as well, and most of the life left.
Ordinarily, with a vehicle that has 350k miles, that is super risky. The funny thing about a land cruiser is, if it is in good running condition, it still holds value.
I would think long and hard about it, and make really sure there are no surprises, at least as best you can.
The crazy thing is, I took a quick look on craigslist, and this one is on the low side of prices. Some had the same mileage asking 10k. That's just a little crazy.
