I have a 2005 Z71 Chevrolet Suburban 4x4 Automatic 350 Vortec Motor. It has a ticking noise in motor. It don't start ticking until you drive it about a mile or two. When the temperature starts warming up. Then it will quit a few minutes after it warms up all the way. And it won't do it again until the next time you drive it after it sets all night. ANY Suggestions!? Thank you!!
Yeah my suggestion is not to buy those engines in the first place because they didn't build them correctly and as they age they will often tick from internal wear which needs rebuilding of the engine it can get very expensive. Whatever mechanic look at it and pray maybe it's a bad hydraulic lifter which is a lot cheaper
Thank you!!
- I've got an '02 Suburban that was doing almost the same thing, except mine would tick on a cold start for about one minute, then go away. Mine would also tick after about 5 minutes of driving on the highway, and would only stop after a few minutes of running on idol speed. I did some extensive research into this and it seems like a very common problem. From what I understand there is a tiny hole in the hydraulic lifters that needs to fill and expell oil very quickly to apply a constant pressure against the cam shaft. If that hole gets clogged the lifter collapses and creates a gap where the metal of the cam lobe and the lifter can clank. Eventually the lifter will break and need to be replaced, but if the problem is caught early enough it can be fixed simply by cleaning out that tiny hole. I thought I'd give various motor cleaning techniques I read about a try. First I used Motor Medic Motor Flush. To refill the oil I used 5 quarts full synthetic 5W 30 and 1 quart Marvel Mystery oil. I also added a very small amount of transmission fluid into the oil as well, maybe an eighth of a quart. It's been a few weeks now and the motor is quiet as can be, not even one incident of ticking. I'm not a mechanic and I didn't have anything to lose by trying these methods. My suburban has almost 300,000 miles. Only time will tell how long it will remain quiet but for now I'm happy with the result.
The ticking at start up can be an exhaust manifold leak. When cold it leaks. It hearts up, the manifold swells and closes up the gap in metal to metal at the gasket. Yes, you hear it in the valves, but nothing is really wrong. I added lubro moly mos2 engine treatment to mine each oil change. I don't hear it any more it is so quiet at start up now.
