Hi all. I just recently purchased a 2006 Honda Civic LX clocked at 115,000 for $4700. I noticed when checking the fluid levels my engine coolant is not Honda Genuine blue-colored. It is your standard green-colored coolant (probably Prestone). Should I drain the green and replace it with Honda Genuine Type 2 Coolant? The car appears to have no issues running on the generic coolant.
If it were my car, I would swap to the correct Honda coolant. The coolant currently in your Civic could very well be compatible. But it is anyone’s guess as to whether or not it is actually compatible, or if an idiot and/or cheapskate just stuck in the green stuff, without bothering to check compatibility.
I also recommend looking into the owner’s manual. Usually they say something like:
Use Genuine Honda coolant, but in a pinch, you can use other coolants (or water), but make sure to drain and fill with Genuine Honda coolant ASAP.
