I have a 2006 pr cruiser with about 145k miles and no major problems so far (fingers crossed). My question is should I look to upgrade to a 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid XL?
Main reasons for this thought is reliability (I only drive 50 miles a day so a new car should last a long time), mpg, and added versatility.
If you want reliable then you shouldn't be looking at Ford; their quality has been going downhill in these years and this is pretty new so why be a guinea pig for a new Ford product. If you actually need to have a truck and want reliable look at Toyota trucks; and mpg shouldn't be a main concern for someone who needs a truck. Do replace the PT cruiser but with something that has good quality and reliability.
I am looking at the Maverick also because of the price point. I agree the PT cruiser needs to be replaced, it's a ticking time bomb.
And that's true being a first time buyer on new products is always a risk
I did see the price on the Maverick but again you stated wanting reliability which you won't be getting with the Maverick. If you want something reliable you would have to spend more for better quality option.
What would you recommend for a low cost replacement?

As for your question do you need to have a truck or is a sedan or suv good for your needs too? If truck then Toyota Tacoma; it costs more than the Maverick but great quality and reliable. If suv then look at Toyota or Honda suv options. If sedan again Toyota and Honda have great sedans. With the suv or sedan from both Toyota and Honda you get hybrid options too.
I don't have to have a truck, a sedan will work just fine. The added versatility was just a nice bonus really
If you can afford a Toyota Tacoma then you can get all you want from a truck, but if not then Camry, Accord, Civic, or Corolla are good sedans. Or cr-v, rav4, Corolla Cross for smaller suv.
It is a good idea to look for a replacement for the PT Cruiser. Regarding upgrading to the Maverick, it’s been discussed numerous times on this forum: in short, save your money and pass on it unless you want to be a guinea pig for Ford.
The Ford product you mentioned is a consummate step down from what you already have now, which is not saying much.
I'd like to suggest alternatives to the Maverick/any pick up. In the same price/mpg range as the Maverick, there are cars like the Corolla Hatchback or the Mazda 3 or no doubt a Subaru. You get to keep stuff you take places locked up, something which your Cruiser does just fine, but a pickup doesn't. You get more comfort and handling. You get pizzas and Amazon delivered, why not lumber and mulch?
