Hi Scotty - A relative offered me a 2008 Chrysler Aspen, with 150K miles for $500. The car has some issues and will need work - the gas level indicator in the panel is broken so for now my relative is putting gas every few miles. The evap was giving some trouble and had a piece replaced, the car was broken into so the radio, cd player and gps screen will have to be replaced or taken out and the front glass is cracked too, so eventually will need a new one. The outside will need some work too - I know for sure a beam is broken, I hope no water got in there. I know you are not a fan of Chryslers and I know you featured the Aspen in the “worst SUVs” video but this car will mostly be a weekend car, not a daily commute one. I am thinking that if a mechanic checks it out it could be a good cheap buy...Thoughts? Thanks!!

How much would you get if you had to junk it?

Are you going to be doing all the work and learn as you go?  Just expect to be tending to the vehicle a lot with issues popping up.  If you are okay with all that and want a ‘project vehicle’ to learn on - that’s one thing and maybe go for it.  If not, I would pass on it.  It’s not worth it to me.

Thanks for that, the car runs well for now besides the issues listed above. I was thinking if mechanically it’s fine, it is pretty affordable. Depends on the work, I am not trying to become a full-on mechanic, but would be happy to take care of easy DIY things...

I would not put any money into it. If it runs, then sure why not. Drive it till the wheels fall off. It's only $500 and the scrapyard will give you $200

No money at all? I mean, in the odd chance it is mechanically fine, you dont think it deserves a second chance? The car completed a Colorado - Florida roadtrip in the summer and besides having to put gas every so often because of the reader being broken, it made it home safely.

that's right. Because for the amount of money this thing will need, you can get a better car.

Noted. Thanks for the advice!

I would pass. It already needs work that will cost more than it is worth.

Thanks for the advice!

It's 500 bucks, if it lasts you six months then you're not out of pocket really.. plus it might be useful to learn basic maintenance on, for when you buy a Honda or Toyota..

I mean $500 is not much for a car, but tbh I probably wouldn't buy it considering it has 150k miles and it's a Chrysler product and Chryslers at that mileage become endless money pits.
