Hey Forum,
I have a 2008 Ford Escape 4 cylinder 2.3L non hybrid with 170,000+ miles on it.
For some reason, when I start the car after it being cold, there is a loud rattling noise that sounds like a flap of metal slapping around. However, when I put it in park to listen for it, it goes away. Also, after I drive the car for a bit, the noise goes away.
Have any idea of what it could be?
Thank You,
-JP
Well off and that's the timing chain flapping around because the tensioner doesn't have enough oil pressure in it to push it. You might need a new tension or all. You might need a whole new chain assembly with that mileage. But if it goes away after you start it and it warms up, many people will live with it rather than try to rebuild an engine on a vehicle that's probably on its last legs. Will that kind of mileage anyway?
