2011 Nissan Altima cat breakdown

Hey Scotty,

I love your channel and all the information you provide.

I have a 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 with the CVT transmission. I heard that the front cat converter can breakdown (clog up) and the engine can suck the materials into it, causing a complete failure which requires a engine replacement.

Could you please tell me if this is possible? Thank you again for the work you and your family do to keep churning out the content you provided.

Sincerely,

Greg Riley

How can the engine suck anything into it when the cat is on the exhaust side of the engine?  The exhaust side pushed stuff out, not in.

According to the mechanic "Car Wizard", it's not only possible ... it's a known issue.

But it happens to the big V8 Nissan engines, not your little 2.5.

To those who say it isn't physically possible ... for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Exhaust isn't a continuous flow. It is rising and falling pulses of pressure, like waves lapping a beach. Can waves pull things back into the ocean? You bet they can.

Can push forces create a vacuum? Absolutely.  It's sometimes called cavitation and it can do a great deal of damage.

Impossible due to the law of physics.
