Hello,
I have a 2012 Toyota Camry SE, 2.5L engine.
A rattling sound and vibration occurs when I'm on the highway, usually going 70mph or faster. However, the vibration ceases when the highway bends left or right and I have to turn my steering wheel to follow the curve of the road OR when I turn my steering wheel to change lanes.
I do not remember when the issue started. I just noticed it one day. The car drives fine, except for the rattling sound and vibration. I even took it on a cross country roadtrip last year (LA to NY and back) and did not encounter any problems. Just the rattling and vibration drives me crazy.
What I've done myself:
New front rotors
New front brake pads
What I've had done at the shop:
New struts (because mechanic said the vibration could be caused by my bad struts, but issue persists after new struts)
New rear brake pads
New spark plugs
My mechanic said that the OBD scanner do not see any engine problems with the car whatsoever.
He also said that I need to get my steering shaft replaced and my engine mounts which he quoted would be $1200 altogether.
I am aware that it's an older car and these are maintenance expenses that I should've gotten done in the 7 years I've owned this car.
But I would like to get rid of the vibration once and for all. And I'll get everything else done before this year ends.
I'm looking for a second opinion, or maybe someone who has encountered the same issue. What could it be? Any thoughts?
Did you balance your tires?
It's possible the honeycomb inside your CAT has disintegrated and is rattling. When the car is cold, reach under and hit it a couple of times and see if it rattles.
