Hi Scotty,
I have a 2016 Chevy Equinox 2.4 FWD. 2 years ago I had to replace the flex pipe, then last year I had to replace the Exhaust Manifold, due to it being cracked and was leaking exhaust we could smell in the car. GM wouldn't do anything about the Manifold and it's a known problem that dates as far back as 2010.
We also have a 2016 Chevy Spark LS Manual shift that has the flex pipe going.
Why are flex pipes used on these? The exhaust is mounted on rubber hangers. Is this just a way to get people back into the delerships?
Why are flex pipes used on these?
Because a transverse engine will rock on its engine mounts, especially as they age, and the rubber hangers are not necessarily enough to prevent damage. (Remember how the Austin America used to crack exhaust pipes and even exhaust manifolds? No flex pipe on those.)
GM (surprise!) obviously has a poor design if their exhausts are cracking even when flex-pipe equipped. Any exhaust shop can install a new flex pipe, no need for the dealer to do it.
