2018 X3 Steering Noise on Full Lock

Hi,

I have a 2018 X3 M40i and I recently noticed when I’m turning left on slow speed (ie pulling into a parking spot) and I have my steering wheel on full lock, it makes a whining noise. It’s not so much metal clicking or grinding noise but more like a whine. I’ve searched it online and some say it is due to the limitation of the Xdrive system and when it’s on full lock it puts the front feels at an extreme angle, hence the noise. However I am not sure if I should have it checked out. Can you please advise?

Is it still under warranty?

Yes it is.

If it’s still under warranty, take it to the dealer & let them fix it. Make a video of the noise so that you have evidence incase they throw you the old ‘it’s normal’ excuse.

Pinpoint the source of the noise using this technique -

Thank you. I’ve made an appointment and will see what they say. Meanwhile, any idea what it might be?

Does it have hydraulic power steering or EPS? Does it do it when the vehicle is stationary/parked?

It has electronic. Does not make the noise when parked. Cannot always recreate the noise every time either.

Hard to say since it’s EPS. Try Scotty’s technique in the video when it does do it regularly. Also, does this describe it? -

I’m actually a member on the forum as well so I found the same thread when I searched. I thought it might also be the brakes. It doesn’t hum or rattle. It was constant squealing or whining sound at full lock. I haven’t noticed anything when turning right however.

Does ambient/engine temperature affect the noise?

I live in Vancouver, Canada. Most of the time the weather is pretty mild but recently we’ve had a heatwave. Considering this only started to happen earlier this week and again yesterday I would say it happened under warm condition. Both times the car was warm and has been driven for at least 30 minutes.

Make sure you have a video for the noise before going to the dealer.

I didn’t get a chance to take a vid but I just remember my dash cam would have picked it up. So will scour through the vids and take a listen. Thanks!
