Hyundai/Kia 6 Speed Automatic

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2019 Hyundai Sonata 29000 miles, with their 6 speed automatic transmission that you mention is pretty reliable, though not the highest quality performance wise. I've never gotten the chance to drive a comparable Camry or Accord, and I was wondering how different the transmissions would feel from the Sonata? What does a "tight" transmission feel like?

I’ve driven both a Camry and a Sonata.

TBH, I can’t really feel much difference between the two in terms of transmission.  Both felt pretty solid. And I actually felt like the Sonata had better quality.

BUT, the Camry usually outlasts the Sonata. So even though we may not be able to feel a difference right away, we will know the difference miles and years down the line.

Interesting, I also like the way my Sonata feels transmission wise. I would've guessed though that a late model Camry would feel superior, as well as last longer than the Sonata. The Sonata also upshifts very quickly, and it feels pretty smooth. I'm curious about the Accord, considering Honda's transmission issues in the past

@mod_man
10 speed auto?

The Accords I’ve driven have been pretty good. Automatics and Manuals. I haven’t driven a CVT accord yet.

From what years? My girlfriend has a 94' Accord with a 4 speed automatic, and man that thing throws your head forward when it shifts haha

Sixth, Seventh, and Eight Generations.

My 2020 Accord with the 10-Speed has been great so far. I like it.

I am not sure what is meant by “tight” transmission as I’ve never heard of that term, but I do know that more gears (in a transmission) generally results in more seamless transitions between gears and also better acceleration;  however, that difference narrows with higher gear transmissions.  So you will feel a bigger difference between a 4 vs. 5/6 speed automatic than a 6 vs. 7/8 speed automatic than an 8 vs. 9/10 speed automatic.

I've heard Scotty use the term when talking about a transmission that doesn't slip, but I just don't have enough experience/knowledge of transmissions to know when one slips, or what it feels like. I guess I could've added, "what does a transmission that slips feel like?" To the end of my original question as well.

@drunkenegg87 Usually when a transmission slips you can experience any one or more of several things: the engine reving higher, slow/weak/delayed acceleration (basically slow response or no response in some cases), also sudden gear changes without input from you, difficulty shifting gears, grinding/whining noises (as gear changes you might hear a noise or pitch), and can’t go in reverse..

All of these transmissions feel the same. The Sonata, Camry, Accord and what ever - all are alright not exactly “tight” but definitely not “soggy”

generally, unless we are talking about the difference between a sports car tranny and an economy car - there isn’t much difference.

(If you try a Ford DPS6 gearbox and a Ford gearbox MPS6 you can feel the “tightness” immediately on the premium MPS6, downshifts are faster, and it can upshift more consistently in much more complex situations and doesn’t not hesitate in gear)

A tight transmission is one that will last more than 50,000 miles, unlike what's going to happen to yours.

You didn't answer a single part of my question

It looks like unnecessary insult towards his/her transmission, instead of just answering the question.

Technically he did answer the question.

@Doc
Nah Hyundai transmissions are great. - Worked on them.

160,000 miles easily - and even if something does wear out they’re so simple and inexpensive to fix.

I’d take a Hyundai 6 speed automatic over a Honda CVT or a Toyota U760.

And even if you disagree with them on their car choice, why be rude and insult.

Usually the transmissions last longer than the engines.

Scotty said that the transmissions are bad too.

Hey, @Doc @billybob
Look at scotties video. As he really compliments the Hyundai tranny stating he never seen one breakdown.
This goes hand in hand with my experience.

Hey @Dan Scotty has repeatedly said that Hyundai and Kia make garbage. Nice try though.

@billybob
Yes they do make garbage, but mostly the engines. From what Scotty says and through my research, and after owning one, I personally think the transmissions, especially the regular automatics, are good enough that it will last the life-time of the car. In short, the engines go out way before the transmissions.
The new ones with the DCTs on the other hand are complete trash.

@Kerem
I agree with you on every word. The transmissions are good.
I worked on those and they’re easily.

Any conventional automatic from Hyundai is better then the vibrating and odd shifting Aisin 8 speed that gets thrown in garbage like the Peugeot 308 Not to speak of the new U760 are depressing… those are pretty much horrid…

This happens to AISIN U760 6 speed all the time but I never seen a Hyundai 6 speed fail before 180K-200k miles.
