Hi Scotty,
I was looking into buying a 2021 Hyundai Veloster N with a DCT. I want a nice sport hatchback and this seems to check all the boxes for me. Do you think this car will make a good daily driver? Thanks!
generally they do for a while but not as long as Toyota Hondas if you want hundreds of thousands of miles of good driving
For 100k miles or a few years it could do fine but after that it is a gamble.
It's not as much fun, but a Civic Si might be a good alternative. But as others have said if you will only keep the N up to around 100K miles you should be fine.
That DCT will fall apart very quickly. Does it shift fast? Yes, SUPER fast. Does it have a special "power shift" button to shift even faster?! Yes. Doesn't it sound like the transmission is going through a lot of strain? Yes it does!
DCTs are well-known for their super fast shift times, but the dual-clutch design itself puts the transmission through a lot of stress. They operate at higher fluid temps and pressures to provide you with that super fast shifting. That's why they need a fluid change every 40,000 miles MAX. Failure to keep up with fluid changes will prematurely ruin the transmission. Plus, those newer functions they added like the "power shift" and "launch control" just put the already strained out transmission through more strain.
If you really want the car, go right ahead! It's a really fun car. I'm just pointing this out before you fully commit to one. Maybe lease it?
I would get a Corolla/Civic for a daily driver and a BMW M5 for a weekend project
