[Solved] 2021 Lexus GX 460 Transmission Failure at 697 miles

Scotty,

Two weeks ago I bought a new 2021 Lexus GX460, my first luxury vehicle.  At 697 miles the transmission started shifting in and out of gear and I had to stop in a parking lot.  The check engine light along with the TRAC off light came on.

Lexus towed it to my local dealer last Thursday and as of today, Monday, They are still trouble shooting and waiting on feedback from corporate Lexus.

They have mentioned it could be a transmission swap.  Should I be worried with such a big repair of a new vehicle?  I’ve never had such a big problem with a new vehicle.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks for the responses, they're greatly appreciated.  Well, after numerous tests Lexus Corporation had the dealer conduct and 50 miles of test driving they have no idea what's wrong so they're replacing the transmission.

The good news is the dealer general manager contacted Lexus about compensating me on a replacement vehicle in a trade.  They agreed and I got a luxury edition to boot.

The sales manager told me their technician said he didn't blame me for not going to trust this GX.  Although this type of mechanical failure is rare, it still goes to show the best of the best are still made by humans 🙂

Great outcome! All the best with your new toy!

Wow that's fantastic. Lucky guy! Thanks for reporting back.

I wouldn't be very happy about it. It may never run right.

Explain to them how much you were excited for a new Lexus, how you feel let down, and that you're really paranoid about having problems from the swap. (and of course research what your contract and state law say about it.)

Sorry to hear that. Just make sure they give you a good warranty for the new transmission as well.

Your transmission is probably the best that Toyota/Lexus makes for the US market.

This sounds like a manufacturing defect and as long as they can put in only a BRAND NEW transmission it should be ok.

remember to change your transmission oil very frequently (every 40,0000 miles with only the OEM fluid) you shouldn’t have too much issues and it should last you 200,000 miles.

The TB-60SN isn’t what toyota used to make, but it’s still quite decent as long as you treat it correctly.

Also check your legislation to see if they must put in a brand new transmission, in many places around the world it’s law that any repair under warranty should be with brand new parts.

It sounds like your transmission was built on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon!
