Hi Scotty,
I'm thinking of buying a new Toyota Yaris. What's the story with those 3-cylinder engines? Are they reliable and otherwise OK?
Thanks
That engine (both the NA and turbocharged versions) have only been out in the Yaris since 2020 MY, so it’s still too early to tell. Even though Toyota makes good reliable engines, my advice would still be to wait a few years and see how it holds up. In the meantime, if you need a vehicle, look at a older generation Yaris that is already true and tried, or look at a Corolla.
Its not ideal for longevity. I would consider a previous generation 4 cylinder Yaris, or like said above a Corolla. The Honda Fit/Jazz isn't a bad choice either.
They are Ok cars, but I would prefer Corolla because of more reliable 4 cylinder and better quality.
Think cheap like Scotty and let someone else take the hit for the new car premium. Get a good used Corolla. 😆
Note that Toyota Yaris's since 2015 have been restyled/rebadged Mazda2s. Other markets vary

Also note that there are potentially 4 different 3-cylinder engines in a Yaris -
- 996 cc 1KR-FE I3 (KSP210)
- 1.5 L M15A-FKS I3 (MXPA10/11/15, regular models; MXPA12, GR Yaris RS)
- 1.6 L G16E-GTS I3-T (GXPA16; GR Yaris 1.6)[15]
- 1.5 L M15A-FXE I3 (MXPH10/11/15; hybrid)
I really like the three cylinder engine in my 1971 Honda N600.
