98 Corolla starts and dies

Scotty,

Long time watcher/fan! I just recently purchase a '98 Corolla LE with 151k original miles, and it has me and my mechanic perplexed. It will start up and immediately die. You have to turn the key all the way to the "off" position in order to crank again and it will again start and die. After tinkering with it for 10-15 minutes you can usually get it to run longer if giving it more gas. The following has already been replaced: fuel pump, coil packs, plugs, wires, even the ECM/Computer (with a refurbished and newly programmed one with correct VIN/Part #'s associated from fs1inc.com/Flagship One).

We are at a total loss, it is triggering a code in regards to the ignition system, P1300. Even after switching out the old computer for the new/er one, the same code and symptoms persist.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on our dilemma!

Regards,

Rob McIntosh

So all wiring is checked out and looks good, no open or shorts or anything? How's the igniter box looking? You get a signal from there to pcm? Or from the coil to there?

Not sure what an igniter box is, is that something the car would have being that it has the coil packs? Has 2 coil packs with two plugs per coil pack.

Try this, I realize this is for a Camry but it should still be somewhere in the general area I think.

As far as I'm aware, the igniter box is actually not something the Corolla's have, can't find any info or location on one, I think that function is built into the computer on the Corolla, which is why my mechanic suggested replacing it. But alas it did not change anything.

When one of my cars was acting up like that it was the ignition switch.

Really? That's interesting...that comment was made to me once before but I wasn't sure being I can sometimes get the car going good enough to drive it and keep it running, but then when you stop at a stop sign etc. at idle it will die, and have to crank it right back up. But maybe...?

Obviously I can't tell from here if that's what's going on with your car, but you're describing what I went through. Car would drive for a while then randomly cut out. Drove me nuts until I finally replaced the ignition switch and it's been fine for years now. Your problem could be caused by something completely different but it's something to keep in mind.

I appreciate the possible solution! I'm going to get another switch and see if that cures it, I'll be ecstatic if it does!

It doesn't seem to fit all the evidence, but what about a failed idle air control? The thing that throws me off, is that you said it wouldn't start back up unless you turned the key completely off, that is odd. It does fit the issue where it would run if you were giving it some gas.

I just don't know at this point, I'm down to thinking it could still be something to do with a bad ground or wiring/connection somewhere, or the crankshaft/camshaft position sensor/s.
