[Solved] 98 Honda Accord Squeaking Noise

Hey Scotty,

So I have a 1998 Honda Accord 4-Cylinder Automatic transmission, with 172,000 miles on it.

I bought it via private party, who said it had regular maintenance. It recently developed a squeaking noise, but strangely enough it only happens when I’m reversing and have almost turned the wheel all the way to the right (clockwise). It doesn’t do it when the car starts, idles, drives, or turning the wheel to the left (counter clockwise). It also doesn’t do it when driving turning the wheel to the right. Only when in reverse.

The previous owner mentioned he had the timing belt replaced as it was due for a new one at the time. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s squeaking I just don’t know why.

Can you make a YouTube video of the noise & post the link here?

Update: So I figured out what was wrong. It was a little low on power steering fluid and I mean it was a little low. So I filled it up to just above the minimum line and voila squeaking gone. I was planning to do a PS flush anyways so this all worked out nice. Now I’ll have to keep an eye on it to see if it’s leaking.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Is your drive belt in good shape?

Yes it was just replaced, so it’s brand new. I’ll also see about getting a video posted.

Inspect the brakes and suspension first.

My brakes seem fine and the suspension is in tact and fine no rust or anything. There was however some black gunk on the drivers side that I wiped off. I didn’t find anything leaking either.

Is the squeak apparent when idling? Or when moving? Or both?

So it doesn’t do it when driving. It’ll sometimes (most the time) do it when reversing and having the wheel turned all the way; either way lock to lock. It also does it when idling but only if I turn the wheels as far as it can go. Normal, wheels straight, turning to the left to turn no squeaking, normal turning to the right to turn no squeaking.
