Isn't leaving your car parked without the parking brake and having it resting on the parking pawl bad for the transmission?

in the future, please use the search first. This was answered several times.

On flat ground it's fine. Yes, on an incline it puts unnecessary strain on the parking pawl and the output shaft of the transmission, where the pawl engages notches to keep it from moving. It can also make it difficult, if not impossible to get the car back out of park if the incline is steep enough (San Francisco type inclines).

if on a steep incline yes, i always use my parking brake.

There was a time when I wasn't aware of needing to set the parking brake but found that it is prudent to do so. Especially with a manual transmission.

oh yeah a manual can still move if just left in gear on a steep enough hill. When you put an auto in park on a steep hill, when you put it in gear you'll hear a loud thud and the car rock. The thud is most likely coming from the transmission, and the rocking you feel is the weight of the car being transferred to the brakes (you have to have your foot on the brake to get it in gear)

The parking pawl is pretty tough. In theory it can wear down over time if abused.

On inclines, it’s bad for the car to be parked without the parking brake. On flat ground, it’s no big deal but I ALWAYS use the parking brake when in park.
