Are ZF transmissions any good?

Hey Scotty,

I’m trying to do some research for a new large SUV to replace my Suburban and from what I understand the 10 speeds on the Yukon and Expedition are complete trash. I need something that’s capable and can haul at least 9,000 lbs. I found the Jeep Wagoneer and my Wife and I really like it. I researched the transmission and it has nothing but praise. The Japanese full size SUVs I know would be reliable but unfortunately they don’t meet my needs and wants. I’m in between the refreshed Expedition and Wagoneer. What would be the best one in terms of reliability and capability?

It depends, the gearbox on the Wagoner is the ZF 8 speed ("Jeep Torqueflite") - that's usually a very solid gearbox.

The Ford-GM 10 speed ("Ford SelectShift") isn't a terrible gearbox, but I've hear quite a bit of people who are having issues with them.

Also, the 6.4L Hemi is a much better engine then the 3.5L EcoBoost - the Grand Wagoner seems to have a much better power train.

But as far as the rest of the car? the grand wagoner is too new to know how it'll hold up compared to Ford (it's not like ford makes particularly good vehicles).

Infinti as a company hasn't been doing well, but the QX80 seems to be a very reasonably well built truck, it can tow a bit under 9,000lbs but the 5.6L VK and 7 speed auto are also well tested and seem to be great. they haven't changed it much since it was launched in 2010, 11 years ago.
