Morning Scotty, I have a 2006 Ford F150 4x4 STX, auto 4 speed trans with the 4.6l 2 valve v8 engine. It's got 161,500 miles on it, and it runs like a champ. It's been getting me to work for 5 years and the engine/trans has never been opened up. I'm somewhat of a mechanic by hobby so I've done a fuel pump, wheel hubs and routine maintenance. It never sees the shop, It's never quit on me, and parts are cheap. It's a fantastic truck. The body is still in very good condition for its age aside from a little bumper and fender well rust around the inner lip. However, the center frame section is rotting from the bottom up. It's a northeast truck it's whole life, I'm from eastern PA close to the jersey border so it sees plenty of salt and snow. My question for you is, do you think it's worth fixing? I have a feeling I can get several years out of the ole' girl yet if I fix her. They don't make them like they used to. I can get a set of safe-t-caps for the frame to replace the whole rotted out section shipped to the door for $625. I'm not looking to retain resale value, just want to pass inspection and drive it into the ground. My biggest concern is cost of labor to have them installed correctly, because I don't want to pour a whole lot of money into a 15 year old work horse. To fix, or not to fix?
Price around to see how much it will cost you to put the new frame on, and then make a decision.
see if you can find a donor truck with a healthy frame. You might be able to score one online that was wrecked, or from a boneyard for a few hundred bucks.
