Hi, my 2015 bmw f46 220d makes a rubbing sound only in the winter when the car is cold in low speeds. when it gets warmer or I speed up it goes away. in the summer it does not happen and braking does not affect it. what can be the problem? thank you for the help
When was the last time you changed your brake fluid & serviced your brake system?
almost 4 months ago. brake pads and the fluid was changed by bmw
Where exactly is the sound coming from? Can you try to pinpoint the general location?
sometimes I think It comes from the back wheels sometimes the front driver wheel
Are your pads sticking to your rotors when you begin driving? Or have someone look at the wheels to check if they’re dragging while you reverse out of your driveway, start driving off.
This is assuming it’s from the wheels and not from somewhere else in the car.
Hi is it intermittent or all the time?
Also does it happen when you go through water or wet snow?
yes, water or snow do not change it
in winter it is every time the car is cold. once it warms up it goes away.
This could simply be a worn slightly loos fitting exhaust mount.
when the car is cold the exhaust is cold, remember metal shrinks in the cold. so when the exhaust is cold it shrinks a little and can create enough space in the mount or clamp to create a noise caused by the vibrations. this would send sound all up and down the length of the car. before you go to expensive repairs check if the exhaust mounts are ok.
another problem which could cause this issue is a loose exhaust silencer baffle ('Muffler' in America) it could be loose when cold but because it expands with heat the noise goes away.
an easy check for this is to get under the car when its cold and hit your silencer (Muffler). if you hear a rattle then that's the issue. if its this it shouldn't cause you any issues unless the noise gets worse. Don't do this when its hot for obvious reasons.
Please let me know how you go with this. {blackemo}:exhausted:
