2023 TLX Type S - I’m closing in on my 600 mile break-in period, according to the owners manual (no rapid acceleration and no hard braking). First oil change isn’t recommended until 7.5k miles or 12 months. I’ve read on various forums that an oil/filter change should* be done soon after the break-in period or around 1k miles to flush any contaminants. I’ve never owned a new car and wonder whether I’m flushing money by getting the oil changed prematurely or if there’s any truth to getting it done with so little miles.
I don't think any engines require that anymore. That was a thing with older engines that had older style valvetrains, metallurgy wasn't as good as it is today, etc.
But with my new WRX purchase, I did my first oil change at like 3k, opposed to every 6k as they recommended. It gave me a little piece of mind and all things considered didn't cost much. I do my oil changes at 5k not 6k. Oil is cheap, engines, not so much.
I always stick to the 5k miles/12 months rule for my cars. I’m leaning towards getting it done for this car around 1k miles and then getting the freebie done at the dealership at 5k miles. But, I wanted to float the question here and defer to anyone who is a lot more knowledgeable than myself.
If the few bucks doesn't bother you then absolutely do it.
It may not be necessary but it won't hurt either.
