Hey Scotty, How are new mazdas? I was looking to buy a 2020 mazda 6 but in 2018 they added cylinder deactivation in their Naturally aspirated 2.5 engine. The mazda 6's are made in japan and I know the Japanese have good quality control but would you still wait to see how this technology ages?

Cylinder deactivation still seems too immature to me. I have yet to hear about a successful implementation of it.

If you are going to keep the car a long time I recommend you avoid vehicles with cylinder deactivation as all the automakers using this technology have had issues.  Toyota still has not used it in their engines.  If you are going to keep under warranty and then trade-in a few years from now, then that is OK but I still prefer to steer clear of it.

If there is a way to turn off cylinder deactivation, it might be a worthy vehicle to get.
