How does Scotty feel about newer Subaru Crosstreks made in Japan with the 2.5 4 banger boxer and Subaru CVT? (As far as I know Subaru has mostly stopped using jatco

The CVTs are a crap shoot. Some owners have reported them failing at low mileage, others say they've gotten 150K miles or more out of them. If you buy one best to ignore Subaru's claims about "lifetime fluid" and change the CVT fluid at 30K-40K intervals.

Meh...I wouldn't recommend or purchase one myself.

Subaru’s CVTs seem to have improved in the past 5 years. About as reliable as other manufacturers CVTs as long as you don’t tow.

overall, the 2.5 crosstrek is:

  • above average reliability
  • below average ride, acceleration, luxury
  • off-the-charts usability

My daughter has a 2018 Crosstrek with no issues at 85,000 miles.  My son has a 2017 Crosstrek manual with a lift and BFG KO2’s; 50,000 miles with no issues. We are pleased.
