Can switch-based emergency brakes be used in an emergency?

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2022 Odyssey, and this is the first car I have had with a switch-based On/Off Emergency brake.

My previous cars had a mechanical lever for the "emergency brake", and I used this years ago during a sudden brake system failure to help slow a car by controlling pressure on the Emergency brake to slow the car safely.

However, can the switch-based On/Off Emergency brakes be safely used during an emergency while the car is moving?

Thanks,
Eric

My guess would be if that's the only way to slow or stop the vehicle to do it, if the computer doesn't prevent you from engaging the parking brake while in motion. It would be uncontrolled full-on braking in the rear, but probably better than slamming into something at full speed.

The system you are referring to is absolutely NOT an emergency brake.  Page 638 of the owner's manual specifically refers to it as a "Parking Brake", not an emergency brake, and instructions on its use is given there.

Page 638? How freaking long is the user's manual? Does Honda expect you to drive it the same week you bought it?

This is all part and parcel of the reason I drive old cars. (That, and being a cheapskate.) The electrically-operated parking brake is only one of many idiotic ideas incorporated into modern vehicles with the only fathomable reason being "because we can".

Don't forget auto start/stop, a tv screen on the dashboard, backup cameras and AFM.

Part of the responsibility of owning a vehicle is knowing how it operates as per the owner' manual.  That's why they have one.  If you had read it, like you should have, you wouldn't have to go on this forum with your question.
