Catalytic converter clean out

Hi Scotty I have a 2015 Kia soul with a 2.0 engine in it. My mechanic tells me my catalytic is plugged. I don’t want to replace it, I want to try and clean it. Is 505 CRF better than using lacquer thinner, (as you had suggested in a prior video). I was quoted $627 just to buy a new one for it. Please advise. Thank you

usually when they're plugged up it's because they collapsed (destroyed), and cleaning will do nothing.

That would be illegal.

Rockauto lists a Walker 49-state EPA (not for California) converter for that vehicle for about $283. Looks like it just bolts into place.

Is your car burning oil? That may have plugged up the converter in the first place. They don't usually fail that quickly.

Thanks

You really need to find out what caused the cat failure.  Is it an overly rich air/fuel mixture, is it burning oil and clogging the cat, etc.

My mechanic said it should be replaced because he couldn’t feel any air coming out of the exhaust at idle. I did not have him do the downstream O2 sensor test. This cat isn’t part of the exhaust manifold. It bolts on past the manifold. If all else fails I guess I’ll just have somebody take it off and run a straight pipe.
