Chevy S-10 fails to crank sometimes

Hi Scotty! I watch every day! My 2001 S-10 2.2L, 5 speed, 84,000 miles sometimes won't try to crank. All dash lights act normal when I turn the ignition switch to crank position, but no crank. Happens one time out of 30-40 trys. I replaced the start relay in the fuse/relay box under the hood. Same problem. Where should I look next, the clutch-mounted anti-ignition safety switch, the Clifford car alarm, or the "Bendix" relay on the starter motor? Battery is probably good; 2 years old and 500 miles. Many thanks!

a bendix drive is a mechanical engaging mechanism. Nothing to do with relays.

Your problem is likely electrical so get out a test light or meter and see if the relay is getting power. It could be a flaky ignition switch.

see FAQ for more info.

Do as MMJ says and test to make sure the relay is getting power. If it isn't, I would think it has something to do with the alarm system. Seems you kind of have a mess of after market electrical stuff which becomes a mess after a while.

Of course not.  Find the source of the problem instead of throwing parts at it, unless you just won the lottery.  Check all your grounds, beginning with the negative battery cable and all others.

The next time that it doesn't crank give the starter a firm whack, while someone turns the ignition key. Could be a bad spot on commutator.

I think he would still hear the solenoid clacking if it were that though

Replace the starter.

the starter could be fine.

It could be faulty as well.

so your advice is to keep buying and replacing parts and hope to get lucky?

This is what you see?
I tell my suggestion. If he likes, he can take it, if not, that's totally Ok.

No, he should definitely not take it.
What I see is a wild guess based on zero diagnosis or troubleshooting. This is the worst way to approach car problems.
It's not what Scotty wants to teach people.
