It will be a a long while, … chip manufacturers need hand out money, first! True, …

US Chip Firms to Biden: We Need More Funding to Remain Competitive

"The plea comes after Congress passed legislation to establish an incentive program meant to encourage US companies to manufacture and research semiconductor technology in the US."

Typical. American companies with poor leadership having to beg for handouts because they can't figure out the recipe to success. Hope they get nothing and fold.

Fwiw, here is a bit more "in depth" commentary on this subject:

https://wolfstreet.com/2021/05/03/intel-tsmc-on-chip-shortage-after-blowing-84-billion-on-share-buybacks-since-2011-and-now-woefully-behind-intel-clamors-for-50-billion-in-subsidies-for-us-chip-industry/

… but I just leave it at that, since this - most probably - is not the the very best place to discuss it further.

Thank you for the info.

I honestly think prices will remain inflated even after the shortage ends.

Now that dealers are seeing how much they can gouge customers and get away with it, I doubt they will lower the prices back down once demand wanes.

That's the key point of failure in capitalism: supply and demand also depends on the involved parties doing the right thing. And that never happens because hey, if you can make more money selling something at a high price, why ever take less? Sure some people will refuse to pay the prices, but the vast majority will just pony up and move on, causing inflated prices to remain for everyone.

Guess we will see, but yeah, it's going to be a LONG time before we will know the real answer on that.

"I doubt they will lower the prices back down once demand wanes. "

They won't really have a choice.

The current projection for chips is in around 2023 so good luck. For the 2018+ Camry, I have the 2019 SE and it's been treating me nicely after the fuel pump recall. Getting 32MPG at 75 mph all day everyday.

So should I wait…

_______________

If you need a car now, I wouldn’t. It will get worse before it’s get better - if it gets better? I’m very much invested in chip production and machinery that is required to produce them, … and I don’t think there will be an improvement any time soon. Two, three years from now? Who knows, … inflation will probably offset any real decline.

Still there is good news, however: … sedans are not selling as vigorously as SUVs and trucks. Sedans are still selling at discounts, … not as much as they used to, but still, …  but only if you park yourself at the dealer and negotiate very, very hard. Ruthlessly, …

… worth a try, it still works in my end of the woods!

If it fits your budget, go ahead and get one. Nobody knows exactly how long of a wait we are in for, so it could be years away.
