Convert Power Windows to Hand Crank

Topic starter

I have a 1999 Buick Century (Custom) with a little over 200k miles on it (the digital odometer is no longer visible and I don’t want to spend the money to replace the whole panel). It’s an automatic.

I replaced the driver side window motor and regulator a few months ago, but the driver side window ceased functioning today. Since it seems like power windows tend to get finicky too much for my liking, I was hoping someone could tell me what parts I need in order to install crank windows in all four doors and what I need to do in order to install those parts correctly. I was also specifically wondering whether I need to somehow modify the doors themselves in order to install crank windows.

Thanks very kindly.

You need all of the window regulator components as well as the door cards from the same model equipped with manual crank windows - if there is such a thing.

@chucktobias Much appreciated. I don’t believe Buick made a manual window version of the Century in 1999, or for that matter any vehicle with crank windows that has door cards that would fit the 99 Century. At least, I didn’t find any info on one when I searched for it just now.

I don’t so much mind the inside of the door being exposed because I can deal with the door cards at my leisure. But, window functionality in the summer is pretty urgent. For that matter, do you think most any manual window crank and regulator could be made to work? If unlikely, do I have a much better shot pulling parts from GM cars than from other vehicles?

@milestogo I doubt that manual window regulators from earlier models would fit. You would need to do research with something like Hollander Interchange to try finding compatible parts.

@chucktobias Thank you for pointing me to this! This seems like an excellent and logical next step.
