Coolant Flush Water (not for the mix!)

Hey Scotty! Had a question regarding coolant flushes:
Is it ok to flush with tap water, drain, then fill with 50/50? I know you need to mix pure antifreeze with dionized/diluted water, but what about the water used in the actual flush? Doesn't some of the water get trapped in there during the flush (even after draining afterwards), which could also potentially contain minerals harmful to engine longevity?

Thanks for any and all help.  2007 Dodge dakota 4.7l V8 FFV

I've never actually performed a coolant flush before. I honestly don't think it's necessary. I just drain and fill with new coolant. If you do the flush, I would just use distilled water just to be safe. Some will definitely stay in there when you add the new coolant, so it will just mix together.

Hello,

Its fine to flush the system with tap water,

But if your engine is cast iron and not aluminum you need to stick to manufacture spec to prevent corrosion.

All the Best.

Yes, absolutely use tap water to flush the cooling system.

In fact, I use tap water to fill the cooling system and I've never had a problem. Our municipal water is mostly rain water though, and very clean and low in mineral content though. Use at your own risk. If you have scaly ground water, then you probably want to use distilled instead. It's cheap enough.
