I have a used 1997 Honda Civic Dx 1.6 5 speed manual transmission Engine is a d16y7. It has just over 200,000 miles on it. I had the car towed from Virginia to Alabama prior to the tow it drove and after the tow I was able to drive it home. I unplugged the battery and disconnected all of the srs plugs so that I could remove the carpet that I wanted to wash and make like new. When I plugged the battery back up it just cranked and did not start. So I bought a distributor and put it on after connecting the jumper cables I let it charge for about 15 minutes I then started the car and it shut off less than a second later. I didnt even get to detach the jumper cables. So I took the distributor back and had the battery tested. The battery was bad so I got a new one and tried to start the car and still it would just crank. The RPM doesn't move at all. Could it have been the distributor could I have accidently messed up the timing when plugging in the distributor? I'm so confused as to what is wrong.
Hello,
Check whether the rubber stopper (red arrow) that presses on the safety starter switch located at the top of the clutch pedal has fallen out or is broken.
See pic attached below.
All the Best.
@dvkala
It cranks. If that had fallen out it wouldn't crank at all. It also crank and started for a second then shut off right away as previously mentioned. If you dont know much about cars why reply?
Obviously as a mechanic I know a lot more than you do about cars,
Maybe you could try and be somewhat clearer in your in your post regarding the issue.
Aftermarket distributors are junk on those years i would check for spark on new distributor check wire placement on distributor after that i would check for priming of fuel pump and main relay then take valve cover off and check timing marks to see if its jumped time
