Dead G35 Motor, What should I do

I got a Infiniti G35 2006 6MT with 22x,xxx miles. It was a used vehicle bought from a family friend.

I'm new to manual shifting so the G35 was practice but I had to learn very quickly because of a mechanic telling me the clutch was near-death. I caught onto rev-matching, down-shifting, and smooth shifting. Smooth-shifting = prolonged engine/transmission life from what I know.

The car shifted like a dream and the engine was strong when I bought it for $1500. After a week of driving, there was a small, whirring sound that would increase when RPMs would increase. It stopped when the car stopped but sometimes it'd just go away on its own. So that's concern number one.

Concern number two is how would my motor have locked up while driving the vehicle on the highway. The vehicle was doing fine and I was going at around 4k-5k RPM on 5th gear. (Would this have caused the engine to seize?) While cruising on 5th gear it sounded like something had broke underneath the clutch area/middle console. However, it wasn't loud or a bang. The car started making a prolonged noise and didn't stop after I shifted back to 6th gear. After about 2 minutes the car just turned off and the steering wheel got harder to turn too. The car didn't turn on anymore, there would just be one click coming from the engine  after you crank.

My mechanic told me the oil was good still that I must have shifted down wrong or shifted wrong somehow. Any ideas? He quoted me 500 for labor only. Could I trust a used vq35de engine? Is it worth repairing? I'm a college student wanting HP but also a reliable car that won't have any other issues. I'm on a budget of 4000.

Thanks for reading!

Hard one to call u are gambling on a used engine .. and u are gambling on a used car.

I would just get a new car.

@klob
Thanks man I'll keep that in mind

Here is really wild idea . I have had people getting this old cars and putting electric motor in them.
The get motor from an old forklift and fly wheel is cut out to make the connection to the motor and adapter plate .
Only problem on the late model is the brakes and power steering is run off vaccum ...
Nutshell it could a truck u just put in the garage and do up over time.
Good luck in college..

When I get the space I might attempt this

@klob
Sounds like a fun challenge, I'll look more into it the electric motor idea. Best of luck to you too!

An Infinity is the luxury brand of Nissan. With the possibility of a transmission going out and a bad engine I would recommend finding something else. An older Toyota Camry  or Celica or Lexus Es with a 150,000 miles can be had for $4000-$5000 from a private party. Have it checked out by your mechanic and you will be better off in the long run. I wish you all the best!

Could probably get one for less! That Toyota Camry sounds really enticing especially for doing Uber eats on the side. Thanks for the options !
