Decisions for a first car to buy

Hey Scotty, which car would you think be a good choice for a reliable vehicle to have as a first car?

2009-11 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Sedan (3.8L V6 with 290 horsepower and an Aisin 6 speed automatic)

Or

2009-13 Mazda6 "S Touring Plus" or "S Grand Touring" (3.7L V6 with 272 horsepower and an Aisin 6 speed automatic)

I know both vehicles may need a ton of TLC in order for them to last for a long time but what are you thoughts?

What is the asking price for each of them?

As I'm looking right now on CarGurus, there's one Mazda6 for sale in Montclair, CA selling for $9k with 91k miles on it and a 2011 Genesis 3.8 is selling in LA for $11k with almost 60k miles on it.

That's the same piece of crap Lambda engine as this right?

Oof, I wouldn't get any Hyundais or Kias with that engine! The difference about the early Genesis vehicles that the engine is obviously built on a real wheel drive system but I don't know if that would make any difference. So maybe stay away from it if was used liberally or just "STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM IT!" is what you're saying? If so, I wouldn't mind getting the 4.6 version as long I have enough money to put in a lot of gas in that fuel guzzler lol.

I looked it up ... the fireball Carnival/Sedona had a 1st gen Lambda 3.8 (G6DA)
This 2008-13 Genesis had a Lambda II 3.8 (G6DA-RS)
Close, but not the same.

Okay. For your thoughts, would the one with MPI be better than the GDI or is it the other way around?

The direct injection engines have problems with carbon buildup (it's described in the article I linked above).
So you get better performance/mileage, but at the cost of reliability and more expensive maintenance to clean the carbon. And I think it even causes the piston rings to seize which leads to heavy oil consumption. Not good if you want to own it past 100k miles. Here's another article:

Scotty made several videos about it

If you're going to spend that kind of money why not consider a Honda or Toyota sedan? They make good reliable cars. Just make sure to watch out for problematic model/years.

Neither.

That’s not a “Mazda” it’s a rebadged Ford Fusion, with a Ford DuraTech engine and a Ford AF21 tranny (based on a semi-decent Aisin design, but definitely not enough capacity in it to use with a V6 engine) - I think US models were even built in a Ford factory in Detroit.

And the Genesis, is a proper luxury car - with lots of electronics and stuff that can break.

The engine isn't terrible (some do burn oil), the transmission is better than most cars out there - but it’s still just not a good car.

Have you considered a 3rd gen Mazda3 / Corolla /Camry /Accord?…

I trust a Mazda engine over a hyundai engine. I also strongly recommend buying a manual and learning. They'll last longer and will provide a better driving experience.

I recommend researching the exact engine in the Mazda. Mazda used both “Ford” engines and “Mazda” engines. If it is a “Mazda” engine, it should be okay. But if it is a “Ford” engine, there may have been some problems with the water pump in certain applications. I don’t remember the details off the top of my head. Something to do with a timing chain driven water pump.

Yeah, it's a Ford engine. Scotty did a video of a CX-9 a few years back that has the same engine as the one that I'm looking at. I know as long as that pump gets a lot of TLC, I think it wouldn't be as bad.

Totally. Overall, I think the engine is a decent engine. It seems to be fine I’m other applications where the water pump isn’t connected to the actual timing chain.

They will also need a ton of money to keep them running. Between the two the Mazda but as a 1st car why not a corolla or a civic.

I like the name Deathmetaljunkie420

Thanks! Apparently I am a death metal junkie, I love death metal, it's one of my favorite genres of metal.
I wouldn't mind getting a civic or a Corolla. My mom has a 2006 civic with 127k miles on it and it's running great. I definitely don't mind having that as a first car. But with me I want to be different and choose something that could be as dependable as those cars as long as they're well taken care of. But hey, thanks for the recommendation!👍
