Do I want to change Transmission fluid on 2002 Honda Accord w/ 120K miles?

Hello, Scotty and everyone,

I am a newcomer, and have been watching a lot of your Youtube videos, and following your advice, I decided to change:

-Transmission fluid (once changed at 40-50K miles)

-Power steering fluid

-Coolant

-PVC valve

-Fuel filter

-Coolant cap

I don't think you mentioned any more. Any way, my questions are:

1. Do I still want to change transmission fluid even though it has been changed only once before? Back then I was so ignorant and just did it because it was recommended at a shop. I do not know if they put Honda genuine oil, but it was done. The car is 18 years old, super low mileage for the age, and changing it may cause more problem because I did not do more often? I am not planning to flush it, just to drain and pour 3 qts.

2. Looking at Honda service manual, they recommend it at only 120K miles, why do you change it more? (Of course, it says 120K or every 6 years) I never looked at it until the other day.

My car runs great, and I don't want a preventive maintenance to start causing problems 🙂

Lastly, is Blue Drive still the best scanner out there in that price range? The only thing I don't like about it is Bluetooth connection. I don't know how long it will last.

Thank you!

All of my friends are against me changing transmission fluid 🙂

Hopefully they did it years ago (I did not watch them). I went for an oil change, and they did transmission D&F and "fuel injection" according to the invoice. I guess they cleaned up fuel injectors?

Today I went to Honda dealer and got genuine transmission fluid and steering fluid. I am ready!

So if I will do it again in 2 years if I don't see any problem. If I do, then what should I do?

Thanks!

Lol. Highly unlikely you will have a problem. You will notice better shifting right away.

I would go ahead and change it. And don't "what if", you'll drive yourself crazy. Lol. Change it out and then get back to enjoying the drive.

With these transmissions, I would be very careful but you should be fine changing it out. Don't flush!

Thanks to all of you! I am very encouraged, and will get to it over the weekend.

You should be alright to do a simple drain and fill since it was done before.

And if it doesn't cause any noticeable problems, do it again in another year or two.

Best to use Honda fluid though.

I did it in the afternoon today.

Missed one thing. I had looked at the plug and realized that it did not have a washer. Foolishly, I assumed that it did not have it, forgetting to look in the plastic pan. When I drained what came out to a milk jag, the washer showed up! It was at the bottom.

Right now it is leaking a little bit. Maybe I did not tighten the drain plug good enough. I thought it was snug. I am planning to unplug it, and hold the hold with my finger and put it back again. I will need to filter the fluid that will come out with a paper towel and put it back again. What a mess!

If I start over the process, then that will be close to flushing, and I don't want to do that at this moment...
