Hello. I have developed a front end shake in my 2004 GMC Envoy XL above 60 mph recently. I've had the tires rebalanced and they have less than 5,000 miles on them. What's throwing me for a loop is that when I'm on the highway, if the brakes are applied, the shake goes away. What could be causing this? I understand it could be multiple things tied to the steering/suspension. But I'd like to find the most cost effective path to start at. TIA!
Check your control arms. Jack up the car and but your hands in the 12-6 o'clock position. Wiggle the tire. It shouldn't budge. If you want extra leverage, take the tire iron out of the trunk, arrange it so it's also at 12-6 and wiggle the top, up and down.
Do the same thing at the 9 and 3 position to evaluate tie rods. The tie rods should not move.
Check all of those 20-year-old suspension parts, steering components, and wheel bearings for wear.
