A friend recently got his license and I’m helping him find his first car. He’s in his 20s and his parents are helping him pay half. His parents want him to get a hybrid, and they’re stubborn and only buy from Carmax. How many miles would you say is too high to touch on a honda or Toyota hybrid? He’s got $5k saved up so budget is like $10k. Minimum price of a car from Carmax around here is $9k. I told him he’s not going to get much for a $10k that’s a hybrid if it’s from a dealer, even if it’s not from Carmax. Carmax doesn’t even have a Toyota/Honda hybrid within his price range within 100 miles. The ones that are from other dealers (since they probably won’t go for a private sale) that are within his price range are all over 100k miles, some over 150k and many 15+ years old. I know good hybrids from Toyota and Honda can still go a long time but I’m concerned for him about the hybrid battery going out. He doesn’t make much money and he’ll still be in school for who knows how long so I wanna make sure that car really lasts for him. We’re in California so gas can get expensive, so a hybrid could really offset the cost of ownership, but it’s just difficult to find a car that will last him a while given the parameters. Sorry for the long post but TLDR the main question is in the title.

Isn't he old enough to decide on his own? Let him watch some Scotty's reviews and advices
@g-t yes but as mentioned his parents are paying half so 🤷♂️
Well, it is their money. They will just have to save more.
Well it really depends on what you pay and what you expect to get. I've seen many Toyota hybrids with over 200,000 mi on them. But generally they have to have the batteries replaced. Then. Then you have to decide whether you're going to spend five to seven Grand for a new battery or try a rebuilt one for $1,500 to $2,000 which may or may not last. All that long. I personally would stick at the 100 $125,000 mile range if you can find one at a low enough price
